Former Super Eagles players and football enthusiasts came together on Saturday to remember Nigeria’s all-time top scorer, Rashidi Yekini, 12 years after his passing at the age of 48 after battling illness.
Yekini’s death, which occurred under unclear circumstances after he was reportedly kidnapped, left a void in the hearts of many Nigerians. Despite the pride in his achievements, there remains sadness and frustration over the treatment he received from the government and football authorities.
George Finidi, who assisted Yekini’s historic goal against Bulgaria at the 1994 World Cup, expressed his continued sorrow over the loss. “His passing was sad for everyone,” Finidi said. “May his soul rest in peace.”
Sunday Oliseh, a former Eagles coach and teammate of Yekini, emphasized the importance of Yekini’s legacy for aspiring Nigerian players. “He gave his all to our country, and his exploits are there for us all to see for others to emulate and learn from,” Oliseh said.
Ace journalist Oluwashina Okeleji paid tribute to Yekini on social media, highlighting his achievements and the mixed emotions surrounding his death.
Yekini’s former club, Gateway United, also honored his memory, recalling his prolific goal-scoring record and his impact during his brief stint with the team in 2005.
Niyi Soleye, the club’s acting general manager, remembered Yekini as not only a skilled player but also a respected figure both on and off the pitch.
Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, Yekini’s legacy continues to inspire future generations of Nigerian footballers.
