The Kwara State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called on the state Governor Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to declare state of emergency on the incessant cases of violence against members of the union.

According to Kwara NUT Chairman, Comrade Oyewo Bashir, members of the union are being killed and kidnapped in some local governments State.

Speaking to newsmen, he said, “there have been targeted violence in Kwara State against teachers. One of our school support officers was killed on his way home from work.

“There was another case in Ifelodun Local Government Area where students were abducted. Another teacher in IBGS Isanlu Isin, Mr Femi Ajayi and his father was kidnapped yesterday, Thursday 13th July 2023. It would be recalled that a senior staff of the LGA was recently killed around the same axis on his way from his work place.

“I can go on and on citing similar cases in Isin, Ifelodun, Asa and other local government areas.

“So, the Nigeria Union of Teachers is seriously bothered by these occurrences. These unfortunate cases are negatively affecting the educational sector in the state as teachers now go to school with fear of been kidnapped or killed.

“The NUT in Kwara State is calling on Kwara State government, Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to save teachers from this traumatic experiences and the educational sector from imminent collapse as teachers and students are no more safe going to school.

“The recent case of kidnap should urgently be investigated and victims set free.”

However, the union also appealed to its members to be security conscious by avoiding late travelling and journey on deserted or abandoned roads.

Oyewo thereafter called on Kwara State Government and security operatives to “rise to the occasion and save the educational sector.”
