A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State, Honourable Marooph Bukoye Bintinlaye has commiserated with the immediate and extended families of the the Africa Professor of Geology, Jimoh Mosobalaje Oyawoye over the demise of the patriarch.
Professor Jimoh Mosobalaje Oyawoye passed away at the age of 96. The renowned professor, who was a pioneer in the field of geology in Africa, died on May 22, 2023.
In a statement released to the press, Bintinlaye expressed his deep sadness at the passing of the eminent scholar.
“Professor Oyawoye was a distinguished academic who made significant contributions to the field of geology, not just in Nigeria, but throughout Africa,” said Bintinlaye. “His work and research have had a lasting impact on our understanding of the earth’s crust and the geological history of our continent.
“He will be dearly missed for his ceaseless efforts and unflinching dedication to the growth of humanity.
I send my sincere sympathies to his close friends, family, coworkers, associates, and the Offa Community in light of his passing.
“May Allah bless him Janatul Fir’daus and give his family the fortitude to endure the irreplaceable loss.”
Oyawoye was born in Offa, Kwara State in 1927 and attended St. Paul’s School in the town before proceeding to Government College, Ibadan for his secondary education. He later earned a degree in geology from the University College, Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan) in 1950, before proceeding to the University of London for his postgraduate studies.
Over the course of his career, Oyawoye held various academic positions, including serving as the head of the Department of Geology at the University of Ibadan. He was also a visiting professor at several universities around the world, including the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Cambridge.
In addition to his academic work, Oyawoye was also a prominent community leader and played a key role in the development of his hometown of Offa. He served as the chairman of the Offa Development Association and was a member of the town’s traditional council.
The passing of Professor Oyawoye is a great loss to the academic community and to Nigeria as a whole. His contributions to the field of geology and to the development of his community will be remembered for generations to come.
