In the contentious July 16 governorship election in Osun State, the Supreme Court on Monday set Tuesday, May 9, as the deadline for its make-or-break ruling.
After hearing arguments from the parties interested in the case, the top court established the 24-hour deadline for the verdict delivery.
The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke and the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) Adegboyega Oyetola were the candidates for governor in the contested election. Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke, the incumbent governor, is at the center of the controversy.
However, despite losing in the Court of Appeal, Oyetola is the appellant in the Supreme Court case, whereas Adeleke is the main respondent.
On May 9, around 2:00 p.m., the Supreme Court will issue the definitive ruling.
The APC was represented at today’s proceedings by Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN.
On Friday, March 24, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned the tribunal’s decision invalidating the election of Ademola Adeleke as governor of Osun State.
In a unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel, the appellate court determined that Adeleke’s appeal against being fired by the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal was meritorious.
Aside from setting aside the judgment of the tribunal, the court, in its lead judgment that was delivered by Justice Mohammed Lawal, awarded N500,000 cost against the All Progressive Congress, APC, and its candidate, Gboyega Oyetola.
