Lagos Assembly Halts Makoko Demolitions After Public Outcry

The Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered an immediate suspension of the proposed demolition of homes and structures in Makoko, bowing to mounting pressure from residents, civil society groups and rights activists.

The decision, announced on Tuesday, followed sustained protests and advocacy against the planned exercise, which many stakeholders described as hasty and insensitive to the socio-economic realities of the waterfront community.

Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams, who spoke on behalf of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, and other lawmakers, said the Assembly intervened after engaging representatives of the Makoko community.

He said the lawmakers resolved that all demolition activities should be halted to allow for a comprehensive review of the issues involved and to prevent further tension.

According to Adams, the Assembly is adopting a more measured and inclusive approach, stressing that urban renewal must be balanced with human considerations and due process.

“We are taking this matter seriously. All ongoing demolitions should be stopped,” he said, noting that the House would work closely with relevant ministries, departments and agencies to reassess the situation.

The lawmaker added that stakeholders, including community leaders and interest groups, would be fully engaged before any further decision is taken, signalling a shift from unilateral action to collaborative problem-solving.
