The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has concluded preparations for the 2027 general election timetable, underscoring its operational readiness despite lingering uncertainty over amendments to the Electoral Act.
The Commission said the timetable and schedule of activities have been finalised, with implementation now contingent on legislative action at the National Assembly. It maintained that institutional preparedness remains intact, even as the proposed amendments to the electoral law are yet to be passed.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during an engagement with representatives of civil society organisations. He said the Commission had long submitted its recommendations to lawmakers, but cautioned that the timing of the amended Act could necessitate fine-tuning of certain election activities.
According to him, while the broad framework for the 2027 polls is settled, specific components of the schedule may be adjusted depending on when the National Assembly concludes work on the bill and it is assented to by the President.
Prof. Amupitan stressed that INEC would not compromise on credibility, transparency and due process, noting that the Commission is proceeding in line with established traditions and best practices that have guided previous elections.
He added that, pending the passage and signing of the amended Electoral Act, INEC would continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities strictly under the existing legal framework.
The engagement, he said, was part of the Commission’s strategy to sustain stakeholder confidence and ensure that all actors remain aligned as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
