Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has confirmed that 75 Muslim residents were killed in a violent attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, describing the incident as a brutal massacre that demands urgent security action.
The governor disclosed the casualty figure during a late-night visit to the affected communities, accompanied by top security officials and members of the state executive council.
According to him, the victims were allegedly targeted for refusing to yield to extremist demands, stressing that the attack differed from typical kidnap-for-ransom incidents and represented a calculated mass killing.
AbdulRazaq said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved the immediate deployment of an army battalion to the area to launch counter-offensive operations under the codename Operation Savannah Shield.
He commiserated with bereaved families and assured residents of intensified collaboration between the state and federal authorities to restore peace and prevent further attacks.
Local reports indicate that several houses were set ablaze during the assault, leaving many families displaced and worsening the humanitarian situation in the communities.
The tragedy has renewed calls for stronger security measures in vulnerable rural areas as authorities move to stabilise the region and reassure residents of government’s commitment to their safety.
