Former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing what he described as irreconcilable and persistent internal crises within the opposition party.
In a letter dated February 4 and addressed to the chairman of the Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area, Suswam said his decision followed deep reflection on the party’s direction and its inability to resolve long-standing disputes that have weakened its cohesion and electoral prospects.
The former governor, a key figure in Benue politics for decades, lamented that the PDP has struggled to find common ground amid entrenched divisions, a development he suggested has diminished the party’s relevance on the national stage.
While he stopped short of declaring his next political destination, Suswam has recently been associated with a coalition of opposition leaders exploring alternative platforms ahead of the next general election. Political watchers note that the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reportedly adopted by the coalition, is emerging as a possible landing ground.
In his resignation letter, Suswam struck a conciliatory tone, stating that his exit was taken in good faith and without bitterness. He expressed hope that the PDP would, in time, summon the resolve to address its internal challenges and reclaim its footing.
“I consider it honourable and necessary to step aside, while wishing the party well should it one day find the courage and consensus to resolve its long-standing issues,” he said.
