The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has inaugurated former Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Alhaji Rahman Owokoniran, as its South West Zonal Chairman, reaffirming the party’s leadership structure in the region.
Owokoniran was sworn in under the authority of the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, alongside members of the newly constituted zonal executive committee. The ceremony was conducted by the Deputy National Chairman, Dr Bamidele Ajadi, who is the highest-ranking national officer of the party in the South West.
In a statement, party chieftain Mr Coker Onita dismissed reports suggesting internal division within the ADC in the region, describing such claims as false and intended to mislead party members and the public. He stressed that the inauguration of Owokoniran followed due process and had the full backing of the national leadership.
Onita also rejected claims that the party’s South West leadership had been disowned, insisting that the zonal structure remained legitimate and recognised. He accused supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of spreading misinformation in an attempt to destabilise the ADC as it gains ground in the region.
The party further discredited a statement issued by a group identified as the “ADC Lagos State Stakeholders Forum,” describing it as an anonymous body seeking to undermine the party’s leadership. Onita said the ADC would welcome constructive engagement but would resist attempts to infiltrate or weaken its structures through misinformation.
He reaffirmed that the party remains united and committed to presenting Nigerians with a credible political alternative, noting that the South West leadership under Owokoniran enjoys the full support of the national leadership.
