The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Nigerians are able to live and practise their faith without fear of persecution or violence, as security cooperation between Washington and Abuja gains renewed momentum.
US Congressman, Rep Riley Moore, gave the assurance while reacting to the recent collaboration between both countries on security matters. In a statement shared on his verified X account on Saturday, Moore described the establishment of a US–Nigeria Working Group as a critical step towards addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
According to him, the initiative would deepen coordination and cooperation between the two nations, particularly in tackling violent extremism, promoting religious freedom and confronting the persecution of Christians by radical Islamist groups.
Moore noted that Nigeria stands at a pivotal moment in its relationship with the United States, with fresh opportunities to strengthen ties in the fight against terrorism across the northern states and the Middle Belt. He stressed that beyond security, the partnership also presents an opening to address broader economic challenges and enhance Nigeria’s role as a stabilising force in the West African sub-region.
He commended Nigerian authorities for what he described as a good-faith effort to confront the country’s security situation, adding that the agreement signals seriousness of purpose on the part of Abuja.
“Our nations have pledged to work together to ensure all Nigerians can live and practise their faith without fear of persecution and death,” Moore said, while acknowledging that significant work still lies ahead.
Despite the challenges, the US lawmaker expressed optimism, citing what he termed positive developments in bilateral engagement. He also conveyed appreciation to the Nigerian government for its willingness to partner with the United States in confronting insecurity and religious intolerance.
