Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the recent terrorist attack on a community in Niger State, describing the continued wave of violence across the country as a national disgrace and a stark indictment of Nigeria’s security architecture.
Reacting to the assault, which reportedly left dozens dead and several others abducted, Obi said it was alarming that Nigerians were being ushered into the new year with persistent bloodshed and fear, particularly in rural communities.
In a statement shared via his verified X handle on Sunday, the former Anambra State governor stressed that insecurity had become a daily occurrence, warning that the normalisation of mass killings posed a grave threat to national cohesion and public confidence in governance.
Obi noted that the attack at a market in the Domo community of Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State was part of a troubling pattern that had played out across several states in recent days. He referenced similar violent incidents in Plateau, Kano and Katsina states, where bandits reportedly killed residents and left many others injured.
According to him, these repeated attacks underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive and coordinated national response to insecurity, driven by capable leadership and decisive action.
He argued that safeguarding lives remained the primary responsibility of government, adding that the apparent inability to protect citizens had imposed an immeasurable burden on families and communities nationwide.
Obi expressed sympathy with families affected by the attacks, assuring them that they were not alone in their grief. He called for renewed resolve to break what he described as a vicious cycle of violence that continues to undermine peace and development.
“As a nation, we must refuse to accept these killings as normal,” Obi said, insisting that the time had come for an all-hands-on-deck approach to restore security and dignity to the country.
