The political atmosphere in Rivers State took another dramatic turn on Thursday as members of the State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Oduh.

The action was taken during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule. At the sitting, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally read a notice of allegations detailing claims of gross misconduct against the governor.

According to the notice, Governor Fubara was accused of actions alleged to be in violation of provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. The document was endorsed by 26 lawmakers of the Assembly.

Amaewhule announced that the notice of impeachment would be served on the governor within the next seven days.

During the same plenary session, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, also read a notice of allegations and gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Oduh, effectively extending the impeachment process to both top officials of the state executive.
