The Rivers State House of Assembly yesterday reaffirmed that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, remains firmly on course, dismissing claims that the procedure has been stalled.
The Assembly, projecting institutional resolve, said the steps taken so far strictly align with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), underscoring what it described as its non-negotiable obligation to uphold constitutional order.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, disclosed that formal notices alleging gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy have been duly transmitted to them by the Speaker. He noted that the legislature is awaiting their responses as prescribed by law.
George stressed that Section 188 of the Constitution vests the House of Assembly with the authority to act as the people’s sentinel, empowered to check infractions by the governor, deputy governor or any other state official. According to him, the lawmakers are discharging that responsibility without fear or favour.
He faulted what he termed a calculated attempt by certain individuals and media platforms to mislead the public into believing that the impeachment process has been discontinued. Such narratives, he argued, are designed to sow discord between the legislature and well-meaning Nigerians.
“The House remains focused and undeterred,” George said, adding that the Assembly would not succumb to intimidation, blackmail or threats that could undermine Rivers State’s democratic institutions.
With the backing of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, the committee chairman urged the public to disregard what he described as “failed antics” of those opposed to the process, insisting that constitutional governance must take precedence over political sentiment.
He concluded by thanking the people of Rivers State for their prayers and support, while extending appreciation to stakeholders and democratic leaders nationwide who, he said, remain committed to the Nigerian project.
The statement ended with a prayer for peace and stability in Rivers State and the country at large, signalling that the Assembly is prepared to see the process through within the ambit of the law.
