Oyo Issues 14-Day Quit Notice To Illegal Occupants Around Awolowo Stadium

The Oyo State Government has moved to restore order around the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Liberty Road, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, issuing a 14-day quit notice to owners and occupants of illegal structures within the area.

The ultimatum, conveyed through the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), affects shanties, kiosks, stalls and ram-selling points erected around the stadium and adjoining corridors. It takes effect from Tuesday, January 27, 2026, with all affected persons directed to vacate the premises and remove the unlawful structures within the stipulated period.

The directive was disclosed in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

According to OYRLEA, the action followed the discovery of widespread encroachment along the stadium walls and access routes, spanning from Liberty Road Junction through the Jogor Centre axis to the High Court Roundabout on Ring Road. The Authority described the structures as a public nuisance that undermines security, disrupts urban planning and degrades the environment around one of the state’s strategic public facilities.

Speaking on the enforcement exercise, the Chairperson of OYRLEA, Hon. Justice Aderonke Aderemi (Rtd.), said the operation was carried out on the directive of Governor Seyi Makinde, who has frowned at the persistence of unlawful developments around government assets.

She stressed that compliance with the quit notice is non-negotiable, warning that defaulters will face enforcement measures in line with extant laws at the expiration of the 14-day window.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, orderly urban development and the protection of public infrastructure, urging residents to cooperate in the interest of safety and environmental sanity.
