Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has projected confidence ahead of the August 8, 2026 governorship election, expressing optimism that popular support will secure him another term in office.
Adeleke, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party, spoke in his New Year message on Thursday, describing 2026 as a decisive year for the state and urging citizens to remain vigilant and actively involved in the democratic process.
Reflecting on the outgoing year, the governor acknowledged that 2025 posed significant challenges, largely due to what he described as external constraints. However, he expressed hope that the new year would usher in relief from obstacles hindering effective governance and the delivery of democratic dividends.
He cautioned against political tension, stressing that elections should not be reduced to conflict.
“The governorship election makes 2026 a defining moment for Osun. Some are already beating drums of war, but election is not warfare. It is the lawful expression of the people’s will,” Adeleke said, while calling for prayers for a credible, peaceful and transparent poll.
The governor also warned against attempts to manipulate the electoral process, insisting that power can only be legitimately attained through the ballot.
“Those who think they can impose hardship on the people to gain power will be rejected. In a true democracy, there are no shortcuts; votes remain the ultimate authority,” he added.
Adeleke maintained that his administration’s performance over the past three years would count in his favour, expressing confidence that he would record widespread victories across the local government areas of the state.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, used his New Year message to appeal to Osun residents for support, pledging what he described as a people-oriented and inclusive administration if elected.
Oyebamiji said his vision was anchored on unity, resilience and shared prosperity, assuring voters that every sector of the state would function efficiently under his leadership.
“As we step into a year of manifestation, we must uphold love, unity and peaceful coexistence. My commitment is to build a state where governance works for everyone, irrespective of background or belief,” he said.
Also in the race is former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly and African Democratic Congress, ADC, candidate, Dr Najeem Salaam. He urged residents to remain hopeful despite prevailing socio-economic challenges and to take active ownership of the state’s future.
Salaam called on youths, women, professionals, artisans and traditional institutions to play decisive roles as the election approaches, stressing the need for inclusive participation.
“The New Year offers a chance to renew our collective commitment to a prosperous, just and inclusive Osun,” he said, pledging to prioritise education, healthcare, job creation, security and economic empowerment if elected.
