The national leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has described the resignation of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, as the end of an era and a defining moment in the party’s political evolution.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and signed by the party’s National Secretary, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday, the NNPP said it accepted the governor’s decision in good faith, framing it as the close of a chapter shaped largely by the political influence of its former presidential flagbearer, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The party disclosed that Governor Yusuf cited prolonged internal disputes and leadership disagreements as the primary reasons for his departure, noting that the festering crisis had eroded cohesion within the party, particularly in Kano State, its former stronghold.
According to the NNPP, the internal wrangling posed significant challenges to unity and effective coordination under the leadership of its National Chairman, Dr Agbo Gilbert Major, thereby constraining the party’s ability to operate as a cohesive political organisation.
Describing the development as painful but instructive, the party said the governor’s exit underscored the urgent need for institutional discipline and internal stability. It, however, wished Yusuf well in his future political pursuits while urging members across the country to remain focused and resolute.
“The resignation of Governor Abba Yusuf brings to a close a difficult phase in the life of our party. We call on our members nationwide to remain calm, resilient and committed to rebuilding a formidable platform capable of advancing the Nigerian project,” the statement said.
While expressing regret that the circumstances leading to the exit were, in its view, avoidable, the NNPP was openly critical of the political tendencies associated with Senator Kwankwaso and his group, insisting that the party was determined to move forward without distractions.
Reaffirming confidence in its founding leadership, the NNPP stressed that the party, which has existed for more than 25 years, possesses the institutional memory and resilience to outlive present disagreements.
The party also paid glowing tribute to its founder, Dr Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, crediting him with laying a solid ideological foundation and articulating a vision anchored on national renewal and inclusive governance.
Despite the setback in Kano State, the NNPP leadership struck an optimistic tone, pledging to strengthen its structures nationwide and reposition the party for competitiveness in future electoral contests.
“The NNPP will emerge stronger, with renewed clarity of purpose and unity,” the statement concluded, adding that the party was recalibrating its strategy to ensure sustained relevance beyond 2027.
