The Nigeria Immigration Service has rolled out an upgrade to its passport tracking platform in a move aimed at improving transparency and easing persistent delays in passport collection.
The Service announced the development on Thursday, explaining that the update followed mounting complaints from applicants after a large number of already produced passports were left uncollected across processing centres.
According to the NIS, the enhanced feature, labelled “Produced (Passport Produced, Ready for Collection)”, is designed to give applicants clearer and more timely information on the status of their travel documents.
With the update, applicants can now distinguish between passports that have been produced and are awaiting physical collection, those that are ready but pending courier delivery, and other stages within the issuance process. The Service said this clarity would help reduce uncertainty and unnecessary visits to passport offices.
Officials noted that the absence of precise status information had contributed to confusion among applicants, leading many to assume delays where passports were already available for pickup.
The Immigration Service stressed that the upgrade is part of its broader reform agenda to strengthen service delivery, improve accountability and align its operations with global best practices.
It expressed confidence that the updated system would streamline communication with applicants, minimise complaints and ensure a more efficient passport issuance process nationwide.
