The Senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Godiya Akwashiki, is dead. He died at the age of 52 after a prolonged illness.
A family source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Nassarawa Eggon, Nasarawa State. According to the source, Akwashiki passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a hospital in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
The death of the lawmaker has sent shockwaves across the state, particularly in Nasarawa North, where he was widely regarded as a committed public servant with a strong passion for grassroots development.
Describing his demise as a huge loss, the family source said Akwashiki’s exit had created a significant vacuum in the senatorial zone, noting that his empowerment initiatives and development projects had touched many communities.
“Since the history of Nasarawa North, Senator Akwashiki was the best senator the zone ever produced because of his purposeful leadership. His projects are in virtually every nook and cranny of the constituency,” the source said.
He added that Akwashiki was the only senator from the zone who successfully sought re-election and secured a second term, a feat attributed to his visible performance and strong connection with the people.
Before his election into the Senate in 2019, Akwashiki had an extensive legislative career at the state level. He served as Majority Leader and later as Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he was known for his legislative acumen and consensus-building approach.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Akwashiki rose through the ranks of politics with a reputation for discipline, loyalty to democratic ideals and an unwavering focus on constituency service.
