The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ola Olukoyede, has dismissed suggestions that the ongoing investigation of former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, is driven by personal motives, insisting that the case predated his assumption of office.
Olukoyede made the clarification on Sunday while speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, against the backdrop of public debate surrounding the EFCC’s investigation of the former justice minister.
According to him, the probe into Malami was already in progress long before his appointment as EFCC chairman, stressing that he merely inherited the investigation file and ensured due process was followed.
“I am yet to understand and see the facts he would bring out to back that claim,” Olukoyede said, responding to insinuations of personal interest.
He explained that his role had been limited to strengthening the process, noting that his priority was to guarantee a professional and thorough investigation in line with the commission’s mandate.
“All I did was to ensure the investigation was carried out in a very professional and thorough manner,” he stated.
The EFCC chairman further disclosed that Malami has been under investigation for close to two and a half years, tracing the origin of the case to the period following the exit of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
