The African Democratic Congress has faulted the Kebbi State Government over what it described as silence and lack of decisive action following recent killings in Shanga Local Government Area of the state.
The party’s State Chairman, Safiyanu Bala, raised the alarm in a New Year message issued to journalists on Thursday, warning that festive celebrations should not distract authorities from the worsening insecurity confronting residents of the area.
Bala said persistent insecurity, hunger and economic pressure continued to define the daily reality of many Nigerians, insisting that the situation demanded urgent and coordinated intervention from government at all levels.
He accused the state government of failing to respond adequately to repeated attacks in the Yauri Emirate, particularly in Shanga LGA, where several residents were reportedly killed over consecutive days.
According to him, the absence of a swift and visible response from the authorities had heightened fear and uncertainty among communities already grappling with insecurity.
Describing the situation as alarming, the ADC chairman questioned what he termed the government’s apparent lack of urgency, stressing that affected residents were not asking for political favours but for protection of lives, justice for victims and immediate steps to prevent further bloodshed.
Bala also expressed concern over what he described as a shrinking democratic space in the country, alleging growing intimidation of opposition figures and increasing pressure on politicians to defect to the ruling party.
He further criticised prevailing economic policies, particularly taxation measures, arguing that they were deepening the hardship faced by ordinary citizens already burdened by a high cost of living and insecurity.
Bala urged the Kebbi State Government to place the safety of lives and property at the centre of its agenda, calling for prompt security intervention in Shanga and other vulnerable areas to restore peace and public confidence.
