The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that it has released a timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election, describing such claims as false, misleading and wholly unfounded.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the commission clarified that no official timetable has been approved or published for the forthcoming polls, stressing that it remains guided strictly by the rule of law and established constitutional processes.
INEC underscored that its operations are anchored on the Electoral Act, 2022, particularly Section 28(1), which mandates the commission to publish a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date fixed for a general election. Any document circulating outside this statutory window, the commission insisted, could not have originated from INEC.
The statement, signed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, warned that speculative publications and unofficial schedules risk misleading the electorate and undermining public confidence in the electoral process.
Reassuring Nigerians, the electoral umpire said the authentic timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election would be released at the appropriate time and in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), as well as the Electoral Act, 2022.
INEC further emphasised that when the timetable is eventually unveiled, it would be communicated through its recognised and verified channels, leaving no room for ambiguity or conjecture.
The commission urged the public, political stakeholders and the media to disregard the spurious reports and to rely solely on INEC’s official platforms for credible and authoritative information, as preparations for the 2027 polls continue to be shaped by due process and institutional discipline.
