A fresh wave of grief swept through the Nigeria Law School, Yola Campus, as the Adamawa State Police Command confirmed the death of 27-year-old student, Ojajuni Ayomiposi, who allegedly took his own life after he was prevented from writing his final Bar examination.
Police spokesman, Sulaiman Nguroje, said in a statement on Monday that the command had opened a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, describing it as both “unfortunate and deeply troubling”.
According to the police, the school’s Chief Security Officer reported that Ayomiposi returned to campus at about 11:30am last Saturday in a tricycle, “visibly staggering”, before jumping over the fence into the hostel area. Moments later, a security guard found him unconscious and vomiting. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later confirmed dead.
The Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, has mandated detectives to undertake a discreet inquiry to determine what led to the student’s distress and eventual death. His remains have been deposited at a hospital mortuary for autopsy.
Preliminary accounts suggest the deceased may have ingested a harmful substance, allegedly rat poison, after being denied entry into the examination hall on the grounds of inadequate attendance and failure to respond to disciplinary queries.
Sources within the campus community indicated that Ayomiposi had reportedly been battling emotional distress after learning he was ineligible to participate in the final Bar exam—an assessment that determines qualification for the legal profession.
