The Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday intensified its internal clean-up drive as the National Working Committee formally issued expulsion certificates to former FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, ex-Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose and several other high-profile members earlier sanctioned at the party’s Ibadan convention.
The certificates were presented during a meeting of the NWC in Abuja, where Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum officially transferred leadership duties to Senator Kabiru Turaki. The move signals a strategic push by the party to stabilise its ranks and reassert discipline ahead of the 2027 political cycle.
The affected politicians had been expelled on 16 November for alleged anti-party activities — a decision the NWC said it must now consolidate to avoid legal ambiguity and operational confusion.
Addressing journalists, Senator Turaki explained that the rationale behind the certificates aligns with Nigeria’s legal framework, which bars dual party membership. He said the documentation would help the expelled members present themselves to their next political platforms without controversy.
“We have certified their expulsion so that when they seek membership in another party, they can show proof that they no longer belong to the PDP,” Turaki stated. “The National Convention made the decision. Our responsibility is to formally enforce it and notify institutions and the public.”
Certificates have now been dispatched to all affected individuals, including Wike, Fayose, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umaru Bature, Kamarudeen Ajibade (SAN), Abdurahman Muhammad, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Austin Nwachukwu, Abraham Amah Nnanna, George Turna and Chief Dan Orbih.
Turaki added that INEC, the Police, DSS, NSCDC and other agencies would be formally briefed to ensure clarity on the status of the expelled members. He cautioned that the party would soon issue public disclaimers to guide stakeholders and the public.
“These individuals remain expelled. Anyone dealing with them as PDP members does so at their own risk,” he said, stressing that the party is determined to “rid itself of the cankerworms” that have undermined its internal cohesion.
