Enugu State was effectively paralysed on Wednesday as members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) staged a protest over escalating insecurity across the nation.
Leading the demonstration, NLC Enugu State Chairman, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, voiced deep concern over what he described as “alarming threats to lives and property” in Nigeria. He urged the federal and state governments to take immediate and concrete measures to safeguard citizens.
The protest was preceded by a preparatory gathering at the NLC headquarters, where National President Joe Ajaero, prominent human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, and other stakeholders convened to coordinate the nationwide action.
The Enugu demonstration forms part of a broader plan by the NLC to mobilise citizens across the country in demanding urgent government intervention to curb insecurity. The union has consistently highlighted the increasing incidents of armed attacks, kidnappings, and general lawlessness as threats to national stability.
Comrade Nwigbo emphasised that the protest is not merely symbolic, but a clarion call for policymakers to prioritise the protection of lives and property, warning that continued inaction could erode public trust in governance.
The NLC has vowed to sustain pressure on authorities until tangible security measures are implemented, signalling potential nationwide disruptions if concerns remain unaddressed.
