The Labour Party (LP) has reiterated that no aspirant, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, will be granted an automatic ticket for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said all positions—from the presidency to governorships and other elective offices—will be filled strictly through duly conducted primaries and conventions.
“We have answered this question several times. The Labour Party has constantly said that the issue of tickets will be determined at the party’s convention,” Ifoh said. “The NEC has spoken concerning our presidential candidacy. Every candidate must emerge through a democratically convened convention. There is no automatic ticket for anyone, whether as presidential, governorship or chairmanship aspirants.”
Ifoh also stressed that the party remains open to reconciling with Obi and other stakeholders who may be dissatisfied, noting that the former Anambra governor’s position in the LP can only be clarified by him.
“Whether he is in the ADC or Labour Party, he is the only one that can answer that question,” he added.
The statement comes amid ongoing disputes between Obi and the Julius Abure-led Labour Party leadership, with speculation continuing over whether Obi will remain in the party or seek a platform elsewhere ahead of the 2027 polls.
