Kwara State has once again earned national commendation for its growing investment in primary healthcare and sustainable health financing as it took centre stage at the National Immunisation Financing Champions Summit held in Abuja.
The strategic summit, which took place on December 8, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, brought together lawmakers, development partners and health sector stakeholders to chart sustainable financing pathways for immunisation and primary healthcare delivery across the country.
The state was represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Health at the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. Seun Ogunniyi, who showcased the state’s health sector gains under the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The event was convened by the Chairman of the House Committee on Health of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Amos Magaji Gwamna and focused on strengthening legislative frameworks to guarantee predictable and sustainable funding for immunisation and primary healthcare services in Nigeria.
Participants deliberated on advancing legislative pathways for domestic resource mobilisation, sharing best practices at national and subnational levels and recognising states that have demonstrated measurable progress in primary healthcare strengthening and immunisation financing.
The event was moderated by the Country Coordinator of the Global Health Advocacy Incubator, Prof. Emmanuel Alhassan, with support from the Chief Executive Officer of the Vaccine Network for Disease Control, Mrs. Chika Kemi Offor.
Speaking on Kwara State’s performance, Ogunniyi highlighted the consistent prioritisation of healthcare delivery by the AbdulRazaq administration.
He said that the state has continued to make strategic investments in primary healthcare infrastructure, human resources and achievement of key immunisation delivery indicators.
He said the participation of Kwara at the summit underscores the state government’s commitment to sustaining health sector reforms, strengthening primary healthcare systems and ensuring that immunisation financing remains a core development agenda and priority.
“Kwara has demonstrated that political will, legislative support and strategic financing can translate into improved health outcomes for citizens. We are determined to sustain these reforms towards achieving universal health coverage,” Ogunniyi stated.
The summit also recognised several states that have emerged as health financing champions across the country, with Kwara already earning regional recognition in the North Central zone for its performance in primary healthcare leadership initiatives.
Stakeholders at the event called for the institutionalisation of immunisation funding as a first-line budget item to ensure predictable financing, especially for vulnerable populations and hard-to-reach communities.
Kwara State is increasingly being positioned as a model for subnational governments seeking to strengthen healthcare delivery through effective legislation, sustainable financing and political commitment.
