At least eight students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) lost their lives early Thursday morning after a trailer reportedly lost control and collided with a bus conveying them from a night outing along Zaria Road in Jos metropolis.
Eyewitnesses said the tragedy occurred around 2 a.m., when the bus, one of two hired to transport the students home, was struck by a trailer allegedly travelling at high speed. The impact caused the bus driver to lose control, sending the vehicle crashing into an electric pole near Farin Gada bridge. The driver of the bus also died on the spot.
Two students survived the horrific accident and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Survivors described scenes of chaos and panic immediately after the crash.
“We were sitting at the back, so the force didn’t hit us as badly. Suddenly, the trailer struck us, and the bus began shaking violently. Before anyone could react, we crashed into an electric pole. The bus just broke apart,” one survivor recounted.
Authorities say a manhunt is underway for the trailer driver, who reportedly fled the scene following the collision. Plateau State Police have not officially confirmed the casualty figures, but emergency responders swiftly evacuated the bodies and secured the area.
