Afrobeats heavyweight David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has formally aligned with the Accord Party, deepening the political realignment taking shape in Osun State under the leadership of his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The singer made his intention public via his verified X handle on Tuesday, announcing plans to visit Osogbo, the state capital, to collect his Accord Party membership card. He said the exercise would take place at the Imole House, the governor’s well-known political base in the state capital.
Davido’s declaration comes barely weeks after Governor Adeleke unveiled Accord as his new political platform ahead of the 2026 governorship election, following his dramatic exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Adeleke had announced his defection earlier in December at the Government House in Osogbo, citing unresolved leadership crises within the PDP at the national level as the principal factor behind his decision. He disclosed that he had concluded consultations with stakeholders and opinion leaders before settling for Accord as the vehicle for his re-election bid.
According to the governor, the party’s ideological leaning towards welfarism resonates strongly with the policy thrust of his administration, particularly its emphasis on citizens’ and workers’ welfare. He confirmed that his resignation from the PDP was formally submitted in November to party officials in his ward in Ede North Local Government Area.
Davido had initially responded to his uncle’s defection with a brief but telling social media post, fuelling speculation about his own political leanings. His latest move now puts those speculations to rest, signalling a clear endorsement of the governor’s new political direction.
The decision by one of Nigeria’s most influential entertainers to openly identify with a political party has sparked widespread debate across social media and political circles. Observers say it underscores the growing convergence between celebrity influence and partisan politics, particularly as parties seek to mobilise youth support ahead of future elections.
