The Palace of the Oloro and Paramount Ruler of Oro Kingdom has issued a formal clarification on the recent presentation of a beaded crown to His Royal Majesty, Oba Joel Olaniyi Oyatoye Titiloye Olufayo II, by the Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, Iku Baba Yeye.
In a statement released by the Media Office of the Palace, the Oloro’s palace explained that the revered ceremony, which took place during the Oloro’s one-year coronation anniversary, was in strict conformity with long-standing historical traditions linking Oro Kingdom to the ancient Oyo Empire.
According to the palace, Oro Kingdom was founded by Oyololawa, a prince of Oyo extraction who migrated from Oyo to Kanko before establishing the settlement now known as Oro.
By this ancestral lineage, the Alaafin of Oyo remains the spiritual overlord of the Oloro stool, with the sacred responsibility of crowning every newly installed Oloro.
The palace noted that this historic rite could not be performed at the time of the Oloro’s installation in 2024 due to the absence of an Alaafin, thereby necessitating its deferment.
“The spiritual rites were subsequently performed during the one-year coronation anniversary celebration, with the Alaafin of Oyo personally in attendance. This ceremony is a sacred obligation of the Alaafin as the father and sovereign overlord of the Oloro stool,” the statement read.
The palace further clarified that the Alaafin attended the anniversary celebration as a Royal Father and duly presented the beaded crown to Oba Joel Olaniyi Oyatoye Titiloye Olufayo II as a descendant of the Oyo Empire, in line with time-honoured tradition.
The palace urged members of the public to disregard any misconceptions surrounding the presentation, stressing that the exercise was neither new nor irregular but a reaffirmation of Oro Kingdom’s deep-rooted historical and cultural heritage.
