A 25-year-old man, identified as Maina Jano, has been beaten to death during a turbaning ceremony in Yobe State, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns over safety at public cultural gatherings.
The fatal assault occurred at the Barwa Fulani settlement in Kafetuwa, Karasuwa Local Government Area, during a turbaning ceremony held in honour of Lamido Alhaji Kunjo. The event was said to have drawn a large crowd, including youths from surrounding communities.
Reports indicated that the incident happened late at night, around 11:50 p.m. on December 26, while participants were engaged in a Shadi competition, a traditional activity often associated with such ceremonies. Amid the celebration, Jano, who hailed from the Nassara Fulani settlement in Kumaganam, Yusufari Local Government Area, was allegedly attacked by an unidentified individual.
The victim reportedly sustained severe internal injuries and was rushed to the General Hospital in Kumaganam for urgent medical attention. He was, however, pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The killing has plunged the community into mourning and cast a pall over the traditional institution, with residents questioning the adequacy of security arrangements at large social events. As of press time, no arrest had been announced, though investigations were said to be ongoing.
Community leaders have appealed for calm while urging the authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, warning that unchecked violence at cultural ceremonies undermines communal harmony and long-standing traditions.
