The Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday took a decisive turn at its National Convention in Ibadan, sweeping aside some of its most recognisable figures in a bold push to reassert discipline and reposition the platform ahead of the 2027 polls.
In a move that sent shockwaves through the political establishment, the convention expelled Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike; former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose; Senator Samuel Anyanwu; Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kamaldeen Ajibade; Austin Nwachukwu and several others over allegations of serial anti-party activities.
Delegates ratified the expulsions almost unanimously, a development party insiders described as an overdue but necessary reset for a platform long hobbled by internal wrangling. Party leaders framed the action as a strategic clean-up aimed at restoring organisational cohesion and moral authority after years of factional battles.
According to statements circulated across the party’s official communication channels, the leadership said the decision underscored a renewed commitment to stamping out conduct that had slowed the opposition party’s momentum.
At the convention ground, the atmosphere was tense but resolute as elders pressed for firm action. Chief Olabode George, a former national vice-chairman, moved the motion for the expulsions, insisting the party must “return to first principles” if it hopes to regain national influence. His motion was seconded by Bauchi PDP chairman, Samaila Buga.
Bauchi State Governor and chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, conducted a voice vote that sealed the decision with near-total support from delegates.
The development marks one of the most dramatic disciplinary actions in the PDP’s recent history — a signal that the opposition party is ready to take uncomfortable but strategic decisions as it rebuilds ahead of a high-stakes election cycle.
