The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has fixed December 13, 2025, for its governorship primary ahead of the August 8, 2026 governorship election in Osun State.
State Chairman of the party, Mr. Tosin Odeyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Osogbo on Friday, assuring that the NNPP was fully prepared to conduct a transparent and credible exercise.
Odeyemi noted that the party had concluded arrangements for a hitch-free primary, adding that its participation in the forthcoming poll would not be a mere formality but a determined effort to take over power from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to him, “We already have four aspirants officially in the race, while others have indicated interest in joining. The 2026 governorship election will be a defining moment for Osun State. NNPP is ready to surprise many with the strength of its structure and the quality of its candidates.”
He described the NNPP as “the new bride of Osun politics,” saying the party’s growing popularity was being fuelled by internal crises within the PDP and divisions among members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“People are beginning to see NNPP as a viable alternative—a genuine third force capable of offering Osun people a new direction,” Odeyemi said. “Our consultations are ongoing, and from all indications, the people are ready to rally behind whoever emerges from our December primary.”
He urged party members across the state to intensify grassroots mobilisation and propagate the NNPP’s policy agenda aimed at tackling economic hardship and restoring public confidence in governance.
Meanwhile, political activities have heightened across Osun ahead of next year’s poll. Both the ruling PDP and the opposition APC are also expected to hold their governorship primaries in December.
Governor Ademola Adeleke has already secured clearance from the PDP to seek re-election, while 13 aspirants have so far declared interest in contesting on the APC platform.
Those jostling for the APC ticket include the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji; former Deputy Governor, Iyiola Omisore; ex-Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Babajide Omoworare; businessman, Dotun Babayemi; and legal luminary, Kunle Adegoke (SAN).
Others are the immediate past Deputy Governor, Benedict Alabi, and insurance magnate, Akin Ogunbiyi.
