The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given the green light to 13 new degree programmes across universities in the country, in a move aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s higher education system to meet global academic and industrial standards.
The newly endorsed courses include Artificial Intelligence, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Science, Geomatics Engineering, Telecommunication Science, Community Health Science, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Intelligence and Security Studies, Human Kinetics (Sport Management), Islamic Economics and Finance, Parasitology and Entomology, Cooperative Economics and Management, and Christian Education.
According to the Commission, the approval of these programmes falls under the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) initiative—an academic reform designed to modernise teaching and learning in Nigerian universities and produce graduates with globally competitive skills.
The NUC explained that universities would be allowed to commence the programmes after completing a resource verification exercise, which ensures that adequate facilities, qualified lecturers, and standard academic infrastructure are in place.
It further stated that the inclusion of cutting-edge disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, Nuclear Science, and Telecommunication Science underscores Nigeria’s readiness to embrace the future of technology and innovation.
The Commission also noted that the addition of Community Health, Islamic Finance, and Christian Education reflects its commitment to addressing national development needs, promoting inclusivity, and expanding academic opportunities across diverse sectors.
NUC officials affirmed that the introduction of these programmes marks a decisive step towards strengthening Nigeria’s academic framework, fostering innovation, and enhancing the country’s relevance in the global knowledge economy.
