Heavy security presence on Monday enveloped the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja as the former Vice Chairman (North Central), Abdulrahman Mohammed, formally assumed office as the party’s acting National Chairman.
Mohammed, who arrived at the party secretariat in the company of his loyalists, was received under a tense atmosphere, following the internal leadership crisis that led to the suspension of Umar Damagun, the erstwhile National Chairman, and Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary.
Addressing supporters earlier at the PDP’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) office, Mohammed reaffirmed his commitment to repositioning the party, stressing that his emergence marked a new phase of unity and accountability within the opposition camp.
“I have come to serve with integrity and renew the confidence of our members in the PDP’s founding values. We must rebuild trust, restore order, and reclaim our place as Nigeria’s true democratic voice,” he declared to cheers from party members.
His assumption of duty followed the declaration by the Samuel Anyanwu-led National Working Committee (NWC), which had announced him as acting National Chairman after the suspension of Damagun.
