The Lagos State Government has approved the constitution of a new Governing Council for the Lagos State University (LASU), in what officials describe as a renewed effort to entrench academic excellence and sound governance within the institution.
In a circular issued on Friday, the state’s Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, confirmed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has endorsed an 11-member council to steer the strategic direction and management of the state-owned university.
The circular read in part: “In line with the Sanwo-Olu administration’s continued drive to elevate standards across state-owned tertiary institutions, it is hereby notified that Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, has approved the membership of the Lagos State University Governing Council.”
According to the statement, all accounting officers were instructed to take note of the development and ensure that the information is adequately disseminated across relevant state institutions and departments.
The new Governing Council will be chaired by Mr. Babatunde Ogala, SAN — a respected legal practitioner, capital market consultant, and corporate governance expert.
Other members of the council include Mr. Oluseyi Badmus, Mr. Bode Makanjuola, Mrs. Mojisola Tolagbe Taiwo, Dr. Shaffudeen Amuwo, Mr. Rafiu Adisa Ebiti, Mrs. Kofo Durosimi-Etti, Mr. Farouk Gumel, Mrs. Adenike Akanbi, Mr. Biodun Hundeyin, and Mr. Remi Desalu.
Mr. Ogala, who obtained his law degree from the University of Jos in 1985 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1986, brings with him decades of experience in legal practice and public service. He had previously served as General Legal Adviser at Guardian Press Limited and as a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly between 2007 and 2011.
