The Lagos State Government has intensified its environmental sanitation campaign with the clearance of beggars and street occupants along the Ketu-Alapere corridor, in a renewed effort to restore order and cleanliness across the metropolis.
The operation, coordinated by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), was confirmed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, through a post on his official X handle on Wednesday.
According to Wahab, the exercise was part of a wider government initiative to enhance public hygiene, ensure free vehicular movement, and improve the visual appeal of public spaces.
“Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps today commenced a clearance operation at Ketu-Alapere, removing beggars and other individuals constituting nuisance along the road median,” Wahab stated.
He explained that those apprehended during the exercise would undergo proper profiling before being handed over to relevant agencies for appropriate action, adding that the government remained committed to maintaining order in public areas.
A video clip shared by the commissioner showed LAGESC officials clearing makeshift structures and evacuating individuals who had occupied spaces along the busy route, which connects major parts of the Mainland to key transport corridors leading to the Island.
Wahab reaffirmed that the operation was part of the administration’s broader #CleanerLagos and #GreaterLagos campaign aimed at transforming the city into a model of urban discipline and sustainability.
“Every part of Lagos must reflect the standard of a cleaner and greater Lagos,” he said, stressing that the government would sustain its enforcement drive across other parts of the state to discourage street begging and illegal occupation of public spaces.
