Kano State moved a step closer to strengthening its technical manpower pipeline yesterday as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf assented to a bill establishing the long-awaited Gaya Polytechnic.
The signing, held at Government House, Kano, brought together key legislative figures, including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Jibril Ismail Falgore, and Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Bello Butubutu, underscoring the administration’s commitment to widening access to tertiary education.
According to the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the bill was the culmination of extensive work by a 14-member committee mandated to design an operational framework for the new institution. The polytechnic, once fully functional, is expected to become a hub for vocational and technical training, equipping young people with industry-relevant skills and bolstering the state’s employment prospects.
Government insiders described the initiative as a strategic response to the growing demand for skilled labour and a deliberate effort to strengthen the educational backbone of the Gaya axis. Officials emphasised that the school would not only enhance learning opportunities but also accelerate socio-economic activity in the area.
The administration is positioning the project as part of a broader blueprint to revitalise the education sector and foster sustainable development across the state.
