Vehicular movement was brought to a grinding halt on Monday along the Chisco axis inward Victoria Island, Lagos, following an accident involving an overturned gas tanker that forced an immediate emergency response and traffic diversion.
The incident, which occurred near the Chisco traffic light, caused severe congestion as motorists were trapped in long queues while rescue officials worked tirelessly to contain potential hazards from the spill.
Confirming the development, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said it promptly initiated recovery efforts in collaboration with other emergency agencies to avert a possible disaster.
In a statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, the operation necessitated a temporary closure of the main carriageway to enable a “safe, swift and professional recovery” of the tanker.
“Motorists are strongly advised to remain calm, exercise patience and cooperate with LASTMA officials and other emergency responders at the scene,” Taofiq said, stressing that all relevant agencies were on ground to ensure safety and restore normal flow of traffic.
He added that the state government’s priority remains the safety of residents and road users, assuring that the affected route would be reopened once evacuation was concluded.
