Amnesty International has condemned the gruesome attack on Bargaja village in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where gunmen reportedly killed five people and abducted several women and girls in the early hours of Saturday.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday, the global human rights watchdog said more than 40 residents sustained gunshot wounds during the invasion, while shops were looted and properties destroyed.
Amnesty lamented that the incident underscored the government’s persistent failure to protect lives and fulfil its constitutional responsibility of ensuring the safety of its citizens.
“These attacks deprive people of their right to life, while the survivors are left without their livelihoods,” the organisation said.
It urged the authorities to go beyond issuing statements and take decisive steps to end the unrelenting wave of killings and abductions ravaging several parts of the country.
“The government of Nigeria must move swiftly to match its words with serious and concrete action if it is to be taken seriously on its oft-expressed commitment to stop the killings, violence, abductions, and other human rights crimes,” Amnesty added.
