Fourteen candidates vying for various executive positions in the forthcoming Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council election, have pledged their commitment to a peaceful and transparent process.
The peace accord was signed on Sunday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, during a brief ceremony attended by key stakeholders, including a representative of the State Commissioner of Police, ACP Coker Shado; former NUJ Chairman, Alhaji Soladoye Adewole; and the outgoing Council Chairman, Ademola Babalola.
The much-anticipated election is scheduled to hold on December 9, 2025.
Speaking during the event, Chairman of the Credentials Screening Committee, Ismail Fasasi, emphasised that the accord was designed to forestall any form of misconduct and ensure that the poll reflects fairness, unity, and professionalism within the union.
“I urge all stakeholders to adhere strictly to the principles outlined in this Peace Accord. We must demonstrate maturity, sportsmanship and uphold the values that define our noble profession,” Fasasi said.
Among those who signed the accord were Adebayo Raji (Correspondents’ Chapel), Oladapo Olusola (Federal Ministry of Information), Akeem Abas (Correspondents’ Chapel), Atilola Abiodun (State Information), Adeniji Olamide (State Information), Adu Dayo (FRCN), Imran Khalid (Oke-Ogun), Animashaun Rofiah (NTA), Ishola Olamiposi (BCOS), Adebayo Abdul Rofih (BCOS), Morenikeji Moses (FRCN), Oladipo Bosede (NFTV), Akinjola Olubode (BCOS), and Alimi Nurudeen (Nigerian Tribune).
However, one aspirant, Nwaoko Samuel of the Nigerian Tribune, was absent at the event.
The Oyo NUJ election will fill key leadership positions including Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and Internal Auditor.
The signing of the accord marks a significant step toward fostering unity and ensuring the credibility of the forthcoming poll, which many stakeholders describe as a test of integrity for the union’s internal democracy.
