A quiet Saturday morning in Ilorin turned tragic when a 12-year-old girl, identified as Nabilat, died after falling into a domestic well in the Ikoyi community of Irewolede, Ilorin West Local Government Area.
The incident occurred at about 10:35 a.m., prompting an urgent response from the Kwara State Fire Service. The operatives were alerted through a distress call from a resident, Mr Mayowa, who raised the alarm after noticing the situation.
Despite their swift intervention, firefighters recovered the girl’s body lifeless and subsequently handed it over to her grieving family.
Initial findings indicated that the minor had gone to fetch water when she slipped, lost her footing, and fell into the well—a tragic reminder of the hazards that uncovered wells continue to pose in residential communities.
Confirming the development, the spokesman of the state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, expressed concern over the incident, noting that household routines often turn deadly when safety precautions are overlooked.
The Director of the service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, described the loss as heartbreaking and urged families to adopt safer practices in their homes. He cautioned parents against sending under-age children to fetch water, stressing that outdated domestic habits must give way to modern safety consciousness.
