The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and his lawyer, Mr Aloy Ejimakor, during the Free Nnamdi Kanu protest in Abuja was due to their attempt to breach restricted areas cordoned off for security reasons.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed on Monday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
Hundeyin explained that the duo, alongside six other protesters, were taken into custody after they defied police instructions and insisted on gaining access to areas designated as off-limits during the demonstration.
“We arrested Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and his lawyer because they insisted on making their way into restricted zones. And not just the two of them—six others were also arrested around the Transcorp area for the same reason,” the police spokesman said.
He added that all eight suspects were being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and would be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
Hundeyin emphasised that the police acted strictly within the law and in accordance with the existing court order regulating public gatherings related to the detained IPOB leader.
“In line with the directive, anyone who violated that order was to be arrested, diligently investigated, and prosecuted. Once we conclude our investigation, they will face the court immediately,” he noted.
