President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the newly appointed service chiefs to bring an end to the lingering security challenges that have plagued Nigeria since 2009, declaring that the nation can no longer afford to tolerate the persistence of the crisis.
The President gave the charge during the official decoration of the service chiefs at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday, where he reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to peace and national stability.
Tinubu commended the military’s past efforts in defending the nation’s territorial integrity and restoring peace to areas previously ravaged by insurgency, while acknowledging the sacrifices of officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
“Our armed forces have shown commendable resilience in confronting terrorists and reclaiming occupied territories,” Tinubu said. “But challenges remain. Security threats are constantly evolving. Of grave concern to this administration is the emergence of new armed groups across the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South. We must not allow these new threats to fester. Let us smash the new snakes right in the head.”
He reminded the service chiefs that Nigerians expect results, not excuses, urging them to execute their duties with patriotic zeal and professional excellence.
“I charge you to be innovative, pre-emptive, and courageous. Let’s stay ahead of those who seek to threaten our peace. We must deploy technology where necessary. We cannot allow the crisis that began in 2009 to persist any longer,” the President stated.
While pledging his full support to the military hierarchy, Tinubu affirmed his administration’s resolve to provide the necessary resources and political backing required to secure lasting peace across the country.
“Today’s ceremony is not just symbolic; it marks the beginning of a renewed effort to safeguard our nation. You have been carefully chosen for this critical task. I expect nothing less than absolute commitment,” Tinubu said.
The President concluded by reaffirming his belief in the capacity of the new military leadership to restore confidence among citizens and strengthen Nigeria’s internal security architecture.
“Security is the bedrock of national development,” he said. “Our people must feel safe to enjoy the dividends of democracy. I wish you success as you take up this noble challenge. May God continue to bless our armed forces and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
