Local government officials across Oyo State have urged Governor Seyi Makinde to contest the 2027 presidential election, citing his leadership record and developmental strides as the foundation for national transformation.
The call was made on Tuesday during a solidarity rally held at the Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, where local government secretaries, chiefs of staff to council chairmen, supervisory councillors, and special assistants from all 33 local government areas gathered to declare their support.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the crowd of enthusiastic appointees was received by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, who represented Governor Makinde.
The officials praised the governor for what they described as the “unprecedented transformation” of Oyo State under his leadership, noting that his inclusive governance model, infrastructural renewal, and fiscal prudence had set new standards in public administration.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Chairman of the Oyo State Supervisory Councillors’ Forum, Mr Ayodeji Oladepo, said Makinde had shown visionary leadership, empathy, and the capacity to deliver tangible results.
“Governor Makinde has demonstrated uncommon leadership and accountability. His performance in Oyo State has proven that he is capable of replicating such progress at the national level. We strongly believe Nigeria needs his brand of leadership to restore hope and rebuild the economy,” Oladepo said.
He added that the forum was prepared to mobilise widespread support across the country for Makinde’s presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In his response, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal lauded the appointees for their loyalty and enthusiasm, describing Makinde as “eminently qualified” to lead Nigeria.
“Governor Makinde has raised the bar in governance and service delivery in Oyo State. His record of performance speaks for itself. There is no doubt he can replicate this excellence nationally,” Lawal stated.
Speaking with journalists after addressing the gathering, Lawal noted that the rally was spontaneous and reflected genuine support from the grassroots.
“Well, you saw the crowd. I didn’t know they were coming, but their joy and determination were inspiring. They came to urge our governor to run for president, and it’s a legitimate call. He is qualified by every standard. I have assured them that their message will be conveyed to him,” he said.
He, however, maintained that the decision ultimately rests with Governor Makinde, adding, “At the right time, His Excellency will respond to the call of the people.”
