Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has approved an upward review of the retirement age and service years for teachers in the state, extending both from 60 to 65 years and from 35 to 40 years respectively.
The announcement was made on Sunday during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion, Ado-Ekiti, where the governor also presented cash awards totalling N46 million to exemplary teachers across the state.
Governor Oyebanji said the new policy aligns with his administration’s commitment to strengthening the education sector by retaining experienced and competent teachers in the classroom.
He described the measure as a “strategic move to preserve institutional knowledge and ensure quality instruction in public schools,” adding that a special committee would be constituted to supervise the policy’s implementation.
According to him, only teachers who are physically and mentally fit will be eligible to benefit from the extension.
In addition, Oyebanji announced an upward review of allowances for Science Teachers and Heads of Departments, alongside the immediate payment of the outstanding 2019 leave bonus arrears.
“Teachers are the foundation upon which the future of our state is built,” the governor said. “This initiative is part of our shared prosperity agenda designed to enhance teachers’ welfare and motivate them to continue shaping the next generation.”
