A mob has set fire to the house of a man, Mr. Samuel Doka, in Bojude community, Kwami Local Government Area of Gombe State, following a violent retaliation over an alleged rape incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, said the trouble started when a 16-year-old girl accused a 28-year-old man, Lukman Musa, of raping her.
He said the girl’s father, Mr. Doka, allegedly attacked the suspect and inflicted a deep cut on his head.
“In reaction to the allegation, Mr. Doka reportedly took the law into his own hands and attacked the suspect, inflicting a deep cut wound on his head,” Abdullahi said.
The assault reportedly provoked a mob from the community, which went on to burn down Mr. Doka’s house.
Police officers from Bojude Division were said to have responded swiftly, rescuing Mr. Doka and his family and taking them into custody for safety.
“The injured suspect was evacuated to Cottage Hospital, Bojude, for treatment, while Mr. Doka and his family were rescued and taken to the police station for safe custody,” Abdullahi added.
He said no life was lost during the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Bello Yahaya, warned residents against taking laws into their hands, urging them to remain calm and allow the police to conclude investigations.
Abdullahi said the police had launched full investigations into the alleged rape, the assault, and the arson.
