A man, identified as Lawal Faruq, has been arrested by security operatives for allegedly setting his lover, Omolola Hassan, ablaze at the Mami Market located within Odogbo Military Barracks, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Eyewitnesses disclosed that the tragic incident occurred following a heated confrontation between the pair on Tuesday evening. The disagreement, said to have stemmed from the collapse of their romantic relationship, reportedly escalated when Faruq, in a fit of rage, doused Hassan with petrol before setting her on fire.

Military personnel on duty at the market were said to have swiftly intervened, extinguishing the flames and rescuing the badly burnt woman. She was immediately rushed to Yawiri Hospital, Akobo, where she is currently receiving medical attention.

Sources within the barracks disclosed that the suspect allegedly claimed he and the victim had taken an oath never to end their relationship — a statement now forming part of the ongoing investigation.

A military source, who spoke under condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly, confirmed that the suspect had been handed over to the police for further interrogation.

“The situation was quickly brought under control by soldiers at the scene. The woman was taken to the hospital, while the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue,” the source said.
