The Kwara State Ministry of Environment has sealed off a cold room in Ilorin for allegedly selling spoilt fish to unsuspecting members of the public.
Confirming the development on Saturday, the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, said the ministry’s enforcement officers discovered the unhealthy products during a routine inspection and promptly took action to protect public health.
“Our officers have done the needful by halting further sale, confiscating the items, and sealing the premises,” Buge stated. She described the act of selling unwholesome food to consumers as “inhuman, ungodly, and unlawful,” warning business operators to desist from such practices or face stiff penalties.
The commissioner, who also lauded residents for their active participation in the state’s monthly sanitation exercise, urged the public to maintain a hygienic environment and remain vigilant. She advised citizens to report any suspicious or unhygienic activity to the ministry or the nearest law enforcement agency.
Saturday’s sanitation exercise was closely monitored by the Chairman of the Kwara State House Committee on Environment, Omotosho AbdulRazaq, alongside the General Manager of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency, Honourable Jide Aina. Both officials engaged community groups and local associations to further sensitise residents on environmental cleanliness and public health responsibility.
Buge reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ well-being, stressing that environmental hygiene and food safety remain central to the administration’s health and safety agenda.
