Gunmen on Monday struck in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, attacking a bank depositor and injuring a police officer during a daylight robbery at Osuntokun, in the Ibadan North Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred around 8:00 a.m. on Secretariat Road, Agodi, caused panic among residents and motorists as the assailants shot sporadically while escaping with an undisclosed sum of money.

Eyewitnesses told The Nation that the victim had just withdrawn a large amount of cash from a commercial bank before being trailed by the armed men. They intercepted his metallic grey Nissan Primera car, marked EPE 901 PS, and forcibly took the money at gunpoint.

“The man had no idea he was being followed,” an eyewitness recounted. “They blocked his car and snatched the money. A policeman who tried to intervene was shot and injured.”

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, said the command immediately deployed operatives to the scene.

According to him, “Preliminary investigation shows that a police officer attached to the command sustained serious injuries during a confrontation with the suspects. He is currently receiving medical attention, and no fatalities have been recorded.”

Osifeso assured residents that an intensive manhunt had been launched for the fleeing suspects and urged members of the public to provide useful information that could assist in their swift arrest.

He said, “The command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents. We urge anyone with credible intelligence to come forward, as investigation continues.”
