Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr Femi Falana, has called for a political solution to the prolonged detention and trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Falana, who made the remark on Thursday during a visit to Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, stressed that there was no justification for the continued legal tussle surrounding Kanu’s case, especially when some governments have opted to negotiate with bandits and other criminal groups.
“I cannot comment on pending proceedings. You understand me? Like you said, the case was in court today (Wednesday), but I believe that it is a matter that should be sorted out outside the courtroom,” Falana stated.
The fiery lawyer described Kanu’s ordeal as a political issue that should be addressed through dialogue rather than protracted litigation. “For me, it’s a political case. And if you have a situation where some governments are negotiating with bandits or other criminal elements, there can be no basis for not having that matter resolved politically,” he added.
Falana’s comments come amid growing calls for the Federal Government to explore non-judicial means of securing peace and national unity, particularly in the South-East region where agitation for Kanu’s release remains intense.
Meanwhile, the Presidency has faulted plans by rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, to lead a protest march to the Presidential Villa demanding Kanu’s release.
Sowore, in a social media post, announced that the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest would take place on October 20 at 7 a.m., describing it as “a historic march” to demand justice and freedom for the detained IPOB leader.
Reacting, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, warned that the planned demonstration could threaten public order. He maintained that Kanu is facing trial on charges of treason, which must proceed without external interference.
